big things, pt 2
Shortly after I got back from my solo press pilgrimage, I was back in the Beautiful Angle studio with Emma, Jesse, and Lance.
Jesse invited us to put together a letterpress collection to be displayed at the Method Coffee and Skateboard shop in Downtown, Tacoma. He had arranged for our work to be displayed starting on July 25th.
Obviously, we said YES and started planning our show. We decided to call it Three Devils & the Ol’ Man. After the invention of the printing press and moveable type in the 15th century, "printer's devil" was the term for an apprentice in a printing house who performed menial tasks, such as mixing ink and fetching type. In our case, Emma, Jesse and I are the devils, and Lance is the ol’ man.
In preparation for the show, Lance invited us to come use his press whenever we wanted. Since then, we’ve each spend hours tinkering in the studio, learning and creating.

Emma wrote up our artist statement:
“Once a week, three curious souls - Jesse Rios, Emma Wonsil, and Maggie Stang- wander into a basement print shop to stir up a little mischief with ink, type, and Lance Kagey, a man who knows his way around a printing press. Three Devils and the Ol’ Man grew from these meetings- where wer joyfully embrace the tangible and the analog.
This exhibition is as much about process as product: the rhythm of type setting, the puzzle of an intricate lock up, the constant battle against ink stains, and the tender conversations shared over the creak of the press. These prints carry with them community, stubborn labor, and the enduring delight of craft.”
If you are in Tacoma, feel free to come by the Method to see our show! There’s an opening reception on July 25th, from 6-8pm. This is my first time having my work displayed, and it doesn’t feel real quite yet! I’ll send you some pics after the show opens on Friday :)
Thanks for reading, y’all!
