Track #7: 10/09/2026
Yikes, this one was late, sorry y'all. I've been pretty heads-down these past few weeks. Also this one is an absolute doozey both in song count and runtime. September was a big month for new music, including some highly anticipated releases. I even left a good handful out of this one, too.
If you want a taste of some of what's to come in next month's playlist, it looks like PISS played a good amount of their upcoming record for their very powerful KEXP performance.
Missed Connections:
Albums that came out earlier in the year, but I didn't hear 'em in time to put them on a playlist.
The Odyssey Cult - Vol. 3 [Psych Rock]
Heavy psych ripper featuring Ethan Miller (of Howlin' Rain) reuniting with his former Comets On Fire bandmate Ben Flashmen in addition to some other greats like former Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley and former Osees member Brigid Dawson.
September 2026 Monthly Report Playlist:

Stream the September 2026 Monthly Report playlist on Buy Music Club while you read along and don't forget to check out my previous monthly reports if you've missed 'em.
This playlist starts off on the folkier side of things, shifts into some post-punk, and then transitions into some heavy, mean shit followed by a two song jazz comedown.
The Drin - I Lost My Way For Centuries [Psychedelic Folk Rock]
An ambitious post-punk tinged psychedelic folk rock record that lives in a cosmic realm adjacent to The Velvet Underground and Can.
Rhiannon Giddens - Hope is the Thing with Feathers [Folk/Roots Music]
North Carolina music legend Rhiannon Giddens returns with a beautiful, captivating album. Of course I had to pick her treatment of (another NC music legend) Elizabeth Cotten's iconic "Freight Train" for this playlist.
Jake Xerxes Fussell - The Old Beloved Path [Folk]
Fussell's original composition "No 1" sets a tone of attention-grabbing stillness before painting his interpretation of traditional songs. A lovely, pensive folk record.
Bonnie "Prince" Billy - Ghosts of American Psychonauts [Folk]
Spanning several shows in Los Angeles shortly following the 2025 fires, Ghosts of American Psychonauts is a great tour of Will Oldham's work that, backed with a lush live band, hauntingly captures a pointed urgency of our burning world.
Protomartyr - Hotel Usona [Post-Punk]
There's a sort of world-building element to this record that keeps me coming back. It has the vibes of some sort of neo-noir soundtrack where the burnt-out detective is trying to suss out sources of our decaying society.
Buenos Vampiros - El Último Disparoa [Post-Punk]
Fun Argentinian post-punk with a slight surfy bend.
Cor de Lux - Year of the Horse [Post-Punk]
Cor de Lux, pride of the Outer Banks, might have a career defining album on their hands with this one. One of their old bios mentioned something about their friends referring to their sound as "Shoe-Gazi" - (Shoegaze + Fugazi) and that feels apt. The record wears 90's influences on its sleeve (pun intended, record sleeve? get it?) as the band stretches and kneads their sound into something fresh and unique.
Black Wizards - Force Majeure & The Acts Of God [Garage Psych]
The scene in Portugal is rad and I've been looking forward to a new one from this psychedelic garage rock band for a while now.
Tō Yō - Yardang [Psychedelic Rock]
Their (fantastic) debut record, Stray Birds From the Far East existed in a realm between Japanese psychedelic folk rock (ALA Kikagaku Moyo) and flairs of jazz and Morlam while this follow-up finds the band going into heavier psych and kosmische realms. A brief, but very solid, psychedelic rock record.
Emma Ruth Rundle - These Killing Times [Grungegaze]
Beautiful. Atmospheric. Heavy. Lush. Typical W from ERR.
Green Lung - Necropolitan [Heavy Metal]
I'm a huge Green Lung fan, but I'm gonna be real honest here: not a big fan of this one. "Then why am I including it?" you might ask. I wasn't a fan of This Heathen Land at first either. I think it might need some time to settle in my brain. I didn't find it as hook or shred-laden as their previous albums, but we'll see how it ages with some time. "To the Gallows Born" is definitely a ripper, though.
the cause of depression - my body is an aeroplane & my home is the shore [Post-Emo]
I have no recollection of how I learned about this record (if you, reading this, told me about it please let me know), but good god I can't stop listening. First and foremost, the bass playing on this record is fantastic and the overall composition is - and I acknowledge fully that I use this word too often but I'm going to do it again anyways - lush, perfectly balancing with the raw, expressive vocals. I don't usually dip my toes into emo, but this side of the spectrum is where it clicks.
Remote Viewing - State Violence [Noise Rock/Sludge]
Holy hell this record is cathartic as fuck. It's giving messier Chat Pile (messier in a good way, to be clear). If you like Chat Pile, you'll probably like this record a lot. If you're not familiar with Chat Pile, well...
Chat Pile - Who Loves The Sun [Noise Rock/Sludge]
Brutalist dread & despair. The sound of a late-capitalist hangover. And good god the bass sounds stanky as fuck.
Ethereal Tomb - Living To Dream Again ["Turtle Island Street Metal"]
Indigenous sludge driving into straight up 90s death metal territory and they're not fucking around. "I was born into your world / but you will die in mine". Brutal. Open up that pit to the deepest depths of hell and throw the colonizers in.
Brat - Manslayer ["bimboviolence"/"barbiegrind"]
Now, I'm certainly not advocating that someone castrate the Cornell 7 with a rusty knife, but if someone were to do that, they'd be hard-pressed to find a better soundtrack. Grind and powerviolence isn't really my side of the heavy music street, but - as with Pig Destroyer - I'll cross the road for Brat. Thanks for the tip, Zack.
Patrick Shiroishi & Jason Nazary - here i am no i [Jazz]
Flowing jazz laced with electronics. A soothing journey that I've found myself putting on after cathartically blasting some of the previous records on this list so I figured it'd fit here well as a good comedown from that high-octane block.
Misha Panfilov Septet - Live in Leipzig and Berlin [Psychedelic Jazz]
Misha Panfilov might be the Frank Zappa of modern times by virtue of his prolific output and ability to put together some really fantastic live psychedelic jazz bands.
