π Issue #23 - No BF or CM Specials
This edition covers a range of topics including book recommendations, credit card fraud, the grace given to AI, and unique gifts for Christmas.
Welcome to issue #23!
I find myself falling into posting on Threads more and more, just because social media is so stupidly easy to type something in a text box, hit send, and then wait for someone else in the world to react.
But I also really enjoy slowing down by putting some of those thoughts into this newsletter, and reviewing them before hitting send.
On to the issue.

Thoughts I Would Have Tweeted
I read most everything Craig Mod puts out into the world, but I've yet to take the plunge and order an actual book he's created, which is why it was nice to stumble on Manuel Moreale's blog post on past books of Craig's he's purchased.
I understood how criminals get rich by using stolen credit cards to buy products that get resold on the black market. What this article shows is how they use work-at-home people to launder the products for them. People who likely never get paid for their time or efforts, or know they're helping a criminal.
When evaluating human output vs AI machine output, are mistakes by humans seen as a unfixable negatives whereas AI's mistakes are just a bug that a programmer can fix?
Is there more grace for a machine because you can tell it it's wrong without worrying about upsetting it?
Instead of getting your friends and family what they want for Xmas, get them something they don't know they need: their own omg.lol domain and blog. This isn't a sponsored or affiliate code situation, I just think omg.lol is a great service to set up your own home on the internet with.
OpenAI had a whirlwind week of CEO musical chairsβsummary hereβbut what got missed was that ChatGPT AI voice chat feature was opened up to all accounts for free. It's slow at times, but when it works it makes Siri feel ancient.
p.s. If you want a good AI in late 2023 primer, Ami from Damn Write has a great Google Doc with all sorts of good knowledge bombs written by a human.

Picture From My Life
No podcast recommendation this week, just a reading one. The 3 books in Fredrik Backman's Beartown series. I don't really know how to describe it, but it's a series about hockey, but hockey could be swapped out for almost any other sport so it's not really about hockey. It has emotional punches hidden around every corner.
I loved it.
Be curious. Not judgmental. π
