Workshops, Permacomputing and Computational Poetry for 100 Years
Updates on art and code, including L5 workshops, GSoC, and Permacomputing NYC in March.
Hi, this is my monthly email newsletter. I'm listing some events in the US (NYC and SF) and online this month, and have plans cooking up to return to Berlin soon. I'm working on art and code this month, most of which relate to the creative code library L5 I released beginning in December.
I have music performances and more coming next month~!
March events
Permacomputing NYC meetup March 10, 6pm @ Ridgewood Commons (Queens)
I've started hosting Permacomputing meetups in the NYC area. Last month was our first and we had 20 people attend. Our next meetup is Tuesday March 10.
You can subscribe to the Permacomputing NYC email list and check out our website to read more about it.

At our March meeting we'll be joined by editors of locally-organized community calendars, including Theo Ellin Ballew and Haider of Red Calendar (https://cal.red), Jessica Hallock of NYC Noise, and KC of the people's circuit.
Launched in April 2025 "Red Calendar is an arts and action calendar that helps NYC gather without big tech middlemen." It is managed by a team of community editors, does not cost money and....is Big-Tech-free. No Meta/Facebook events, No Amazon Web Services, No Google Calendar, etc. Almost a year into its launch is the perfect time to learn more about why and how they did it, what they've learned, and what other initiatives can learn from them. NYC Noise is an open source site dedicated to presenting, promoting, and documenting NYC's experimental (slash avant-whatev, DIY, weirdo) music & artists; Primary Goals include making sh*t accessible, performance against corporate interests, & finding ways to make this last. the people's circuit project is an attempt to disrupt and circumvent Meta/IG's monopoly on our social practices, attention, and ability to commune, spread and receive information.
We'll also discuss the topic of Degrowth, including What might degrowth computing look like?
L5 WORKSHOP March 21 @ CCFest (Online)

I'll be teaching a workshop at CCFest online on March 21. Conference registration is free. Keynote speakers are p5.js project lead Kit Kuksenok and technologist, blogger, activist Anil Dash. And there are many more workshops. This event is held online.
Join us on Saturday, March 21, for a day of keynotes, workshops, and connecting with people on creative coding. We will be featuring two amazing keynotes and many workshops from educator and artists from across the world.
More info and registration here.
Computational Poetry for 100 Years workshop at Algorithmic Art Assembly (San Francisco)

Algorithmic Art Assembly is coming up March 26 - 28 at Grey Area in San Francisco. I'll be giving a talk on L5 at the conference and I'm leading an afternoon workshop on computational poetry with L5 on Thursday, March 26 at 1:30pm.
Opportunity

Processing Foundation is participating in the GSoC summer of code program again, and this time I'll be a mentor for L5 projects.
Are you a passionate beginner ready to make your mark in open source? Now is your chance to make an impact in the 2026 Google Summer of Code (GSoC) program!
It is a paid program. I've written up some suggested ideas in case you'd like to apply to be paid to help develop L5 with me this summer. The application deadline is March 31, and is open to anyone in any location around the world. There is a thread on the Processing discourse forum to ask questions and get tips, and you can also read about the program and timeline. Let me know if you have any questions about this.
Coming Soon
- I'll be hosting a L5 Contributors meetup in April - I'm not yet sure if it will be in person, online, or both. Lots of Contributors have already helped shape the code library as well as the documentation. Thank you! Huge thanks to Jessica Garson for creating this helpful Contributors Guide.
- Graduate students from University of Washington Department of Human Centered Design and Engineering are conducting usability studies on L5 and its documentation this month
- I am creating a score for a live performance work by artist Ivanna Larossa. We'll perform live at the Black Mountain College Museum's ReHappening festival at the original site of Black Mountain College along Lake Eden in North Carolina on Saturday, April 25. More info on the festival.
Past
- We launched an Open House for the TAPROOT Interactive Media Lab at Purchase College a few weeks ago. Thanks to the Taproot Commitee and Taproot fellows for presenting their artwork, leading workshops and showing student work. My colleague Joe McKay and I taught a workshop on facial recognition and OpenCV. Students built filters, experimental digital masks, artworks and other experiments. Taproot is made possible by a grant from Sherman Fairchild Foundation to fund The TAPROOT Project through academic year 2028.
- I log about my daily studio/code work, and I blog because I want to share my thoughts. Send me your blogs and newsletters!
Asks
- I'd love to play more gigs, improv jam with friends, do field recording projects, and write performance scores this spring and summer in NYC and Berlin! Write to me if you're interested in 'jamming.'
- I have a body of work I'd like to exhibit! Get in touch to do a studio visit, in NYC, Berlin, or online!
NO ENDLESS WARS! NO GODS! NO MASTERS! NO COMPLY!
In cahoots.
Warmly, Lee
