Hi everyone,
I didn't send an email for a year and now a second one in a month. I'll keep it short. Here's what I'm up to, mostly in NYC this month.
I am performing Saturday Sep 14, at the Emergent Behavior event for the Spiritual Machines exhibit that I also have an artwork in, and will be open during the show. The event is located on Governor's Island in NYC, in building 404 (Flux Factory).
I will be performing on the Plinky touch synthesizer that I built with instrument builder, composer and Flux Factory friend Daniel Fishkin.
Wordhack is a communal space where people making language-based digital projects [can] share their work. It's been going on for a decade, and was previously held at Babycastles before we closed. I'll be presenting my work at the next Wordhack on Thursday, September 19th, 7pm-10pm at Wonderville in Bushwick (1186 Broadway) and online on the Wonderville twitch livestream that evening. The night opens with the Open Projector where anyone can share a tiny talk on a project they've made. Then the three main talks that evening are
WordHack host Todd Anderson notes that typically the event does sell out by the day of the show, so consider getting tickets in advance.
This semester I am teaching Programming Games and Programming for Visual Artists. My curriculum is open sourced and creative commons licensed, so feel free to use resources there if it would be helpful to you. I add content to these sites each week of class. I have a really great crop of students this semester, which is really gratifying. I had been worrying a ton last year when I found in my intro classes that students were not as deeply engaged and addicted to their phones. This year I have the complete opposite dynamic: very engaged and excited students. It's really fun.
This month I am listening to Voidgaze and Blackened Crust (black metal shoegaze crust etc microgenres) while biking, and Sofie Birch's Ambient Abracadabra while reading or working.
Tootaloo,
Lee
