Today is Indigenous People’s Day and since this is a poetry newsletter I’d like to share with you a list of books I have loved by Indigenous authors. Most are poetry books but a few are prose.
Whereas by Layli Long Soldier
Removal Acts by Erin Marie Lynch
The Sky Was Once a Dark Blanket by Kinsale Drake
White Magic by Elissa Washuta
Solar Storms by Linda Hogan
fox woman get out! by India Lena González
Abandon Me by Melissa Febos
Who’s Afraid of Black Indians? by Shonda Buchanan
Ocean Power: Poems from the Desert by Ofelia Zepeda
For those of us who are settlers, today is a good day to look up whose unceded, occupied land we live on and research ways to support the indigenous people who have been caring for that land since time immemorial. If you, like me, live in occupied Tovaangar (referred to by its settler name of Los Angeles), the Tongva Taraxat Paxaavxa Conservancy invites a monthly Kuuy Nahwá’a, or Guest Exchange monthly donation, “a voluntary contribution to support Tongva-led Land Back efforts, acknowledging both relationships and reciprocity to the lands and Native Peoples of Tovaangar, this place many of us now call home.”
