We've been test screening Where in the Hell over the past week or so, the idea being that it's wise to share with an eclectic group of people, not all filmmakers necessarily, before we lock picture. Get feedback on the pacing, the music, ask is anything confusing? Etc.
All the little tweaky notes are useful. A little overwhelming! But useful. As I expected they would be.Â
What I did not expect somehow, is that the surveys are giving us a real sense of our audience. There's an audience for this movie!!! I knew that, of course I did, but it makes my heart sing to have confirmation.
Indulge me in sharing a few early, anonymous reviews.
Authentic and funny and poignant and visually exquisite... It's America as we hardly ever see it.
It brought me back to the movies I LOVED SO MUCH in high school like the Hal Hartley and Alison Anders indies of the 90s. Enjoyable, lighthearted and sometimes fun movies, but that also care about being beautifully shot, evoking a range of emotion and having its characters asking questions of themselves and their lives.Â
These characters aren't Laramie, but I loved it when an occasional mannerism or turn of phrase would remind me of her.
*****
This month in print: I devoured
The Knockout Queen, and
Enter Ghost.
This month in movies:
Stay on Board: The Leo Baker Story, a doc about a trans pro skateboarder, is the best thing I've watched in a while. Short and sweet and beautifully shot. Come for the excellent "goofy-footed" skateboarding, stay for the riveting emotional journey. The fact that Netflix bought this doc has raised them 1000% in my estimation.
This month in tacos: On a wee roadtrip with my Da, we sampled solid, simple asada tacos from
FYABESÂ in Forks, WA (if you happen to be hitting the Olympic National Forest this summer...), and bougie ones from
Maiz Molino in Seattle, that didn't quite get there. Maiz's guisados (aka fillings) were good, but the housemade tortillas dried out on the ten-minute journey from restaurant to hotel, and cracked in half when we lifted them to take a bite. No bueno. Get the tamales instead.
xoxo,
Laramie
