Hello friends!
That month went fast.
I fell off on my page a day, pretty much the instant I sent the April 1 newsletter. I was so pleased with myself that I rested on my laurels for a day. And then two days. And man is it hard to get up off those laurels....
Also I got kinda jammed up in the middle of act two. I will get back to it, I promise.
The good news is, Melia and I hashed out a synopsis and she wrote a badass artistic statement and we submitted our app to the Sundance screenwriting lab. A WHOLE DAY EARLY. Just meeting that deadline feels like an accomplishment, whether or not we make it to the next round.
Have I mentioned Melia, my writing partner? At my request, she's been letting me slog through the first draft of the script on my own. It was a revelation to have her come back and whip me into shape. It's Melia's story we're telling, a dark comedy about an aging rock star, her neurotic daughter, and a newly sober 18-year-old who's just busted out of rehab.
I keep trying to pitch it as ultra-low-budget Postcards from the Edge. Has anyone under 40 seen that movie??
On the Scriptnotes podcast, John August and Craig Mazin joked that the next big trend in titling spec scripts will be the emoji-only title. So ours would be something like 😎🚫💊 .
Still working on it.

This month in music: Martin Gore of Depeche Mode just put out
a new instrumental album, and it is perfect for tuning out the world and doing your thing. Spacey + soundtracky and just enough upbeat.
This month in tacos: Allow me to recommend a recipe.
These polenta fries are KILLER and pretty much impossible to fuck up. I first made them when I had some leftover polenta to get rid of, and now I always make extra so we can have these on day two.
(Note: No need to use a nonstick baking sheet. In fact,
toss out all your nonstick cookware.)

p.s. The Tevas are awesome.
I promise to post a photo or two from Cannes.
