I've been in limbo these past months. Staying in. Rehabbing my wrists. Making small, meaningful strides with the edit, though we've got a long way to go. We're in the running for a big post-production grant, and have had two great meetings with a pair of producers who will come aboard to help raise further finishing funds, and—ideally—sell the movie.
Ricky got Covid on my birthday, at a family memorial in Mississippi, and was in bad shape for several weeks. He's still not back to 100%. I never tested positive, but I'm pretty sure it skated over me. I had that tickle of
do I have a cold? for a day and then it was gone.
I've been seeing
a terrific acupuncturist, and boring everyone with tales of the extreme anti-inflammation diet she has me on. No sugar, no alcohol, no caffeine, no dairy, no spicy foods, no nightshades. I'm sorry to report that it has helped.
But is the lack of caffeine, SPECIFICALLY COFFEE, the reason I feel so. Dull. Or is it shock. Stress. Reaction to the world coming apart. The supreme court taking away our basic human rights. I feel almost too calm.
How are
you feeling?
I'll get back to coffee. I'm already drinking green tea again. (Don't tell Irina.) For the past five weeks, I've been back at work on a script supervising gig, doing loooong hours, and in week four I caved.
A book: Per
Ann Friedman, I'm reading Kate Atkinson's
Life After Life, which is lovely lovely lovely, though plotlines about Spanish Flu and illegal abortion and dystopian London post-WWII are almost too topical. (The novel came out in 2013.)
A couple of tacos: From
Evil Cooks in El Sereno, The McSatan, a bonkers concoction of mozzarella, burger, American cheese, bacon, and guacamole, atop a homemade corn tortilla. It's crucial that you eat it immediately—in your car, or in the stands of the nearby park, watching a little league game—while the cheese is hot and melty. The black pastor and green chorizo tacos are solid too, but y'all, THE MCSATAN. And from
Little Fox Cups + Cones in Encinitas, a vegan, gluten-free ice cream taco I'll be going back for every time I'm down there. The details are fuzzy, it's been too long since I've written, but I'm remembering peanut butter and chocolate and a salty dusting of gluten-free pretzel crumbs.
Yeah I've cheated
a little on sugar. And dairy. And spicy foods. DON'T TELL IRINA.
xoxo,
Laramie
