Dear Friends,
The 2026 Annual Town Meeting has wrapped up, but we still have one important step remaining. We need you to show up on June 16th!
Lexington’s Town Meeting passed Article 31 to address rapidly rising trash disposal costs. On Tuesday, June 16th it goes to a town-wide vote. A YES vote is critical to protecting our community services.
What the proposal does: The new system provides free collection of a standard amount of trash while offering options to manage additional trash beyond that threshold. This modernizes a bylaw designed for a society from over 100 years ago that simply doesn’t reflect today’s needs or costs.
Why it matters: A YES vote protects funding for our library, schools, fire, police, and senior and community services. Without action, rising trash disposal costs will continue to squeeze the town budget. This year, we saw what a $4.7M deficit does.
This isn’t a rushed decision. The proposal is the result of a multi-year public process through Lexington’s Waste Reduction and Modernization Program, and neighboring towns have already taken similar steps. Arlington is saving roughly $10 million over a 5-year contract with their new system.
I’m asking for your support by voting YES on Tuesday, June 16th so we can keep the lid on trash spending—and keep our community services strong.
I’m committed to ensuring that we can keep our excellent municipal services and schools funded. We must take actions like these to ensure that we’re running our services in the most efficient way possible. Lexington is not alone, read Rep. Michelle Ciccolo’s letter about how disposal challenges across the Commonwealth.
