What Global Buyers Should Confirm Before Ordering Special Steel
Ordering special steel is not only a question of choosing a grade. The delivery condition, production route, testing scope and machining allowance can all change how the material performs in service and how efficiently it moves through the buyer's plant.
Start with the application. Define the required hardness, toughness, wear resistance, operating temperature and expected loading conditions. Then confirm the governing standard and any customer-specific limits for chemistry or mechanical properties.
Next, specify the production route. EAF melting provides flexibility for alloy steel production, while LF refining and VD vacuum treatment improve control of chemistry, temperature and dissolved gases. For applications that need higher cleanliness or structural uniformity, ESR may be included as an additional remelting stage.
Forging requirements should be agreed before production. Billet size, reduction ratio and final dimensions influence internal soundness and machining allowance. The heat-treatment condition must also be clear: annealed, normalized, quenched and tempered, or another agreed condition.
Documentation deserves the same attention as material properties. A complete purchasing specification should state the required mill test certificate, heat-number traceability, ultrasonic or other nondestructive testing, mechanical tests and dimensional inspection.
Hubei Keyspark Special Steel Co., Ltd. combines EAF, LF, VD and multiple ESR furnaces with a 5,000-ton press, forging hammers, precision and vacuum heat-treatment furnaces, and machining equipment. The company provides full-process special steel solutions with original mill test certificates and strict quality control.
