the garden gate, vol. 16 🌿

a quick word from the gardener
Here we are in Holy Week again.
This year, I feel myself taking a deep breath.
The rituals feel like an invitation to bring my body into the remembering.
Because I am so forgetful.
The Gospel is this shocking story I grow numb to—
something I stop living inside of.
My body needs to be brought back into the story.
Today I let go of my tendency
to focus my mind on the right things,
to try to drum up the right emotions,
and instead rest in the flow of tradition.
I’ll let myself be gathered up again
with the generations of disciples—
drawn back to the center
of what is most true.
today’s invitation
Follow Jesus out of the grave.
This week we remember his descent into the depths.
He plunged his soul into the darkness willingly.
But oh fool, Death, to receive the living God into yourself!
He went in as a lion to rescue His beloved.
And as He burst forth into glorious light,
he took the hand of the condemned.
And even now
He leads us out
of the living deaths we grow used to
into the presence of life and love—
into the nearness of God.
