Dashed Hopes, Sobered Eyes, and the World as Given
Friends,
As you may be aware, October was a noteworthy month for the Anglican Communion.
(If you find yourself interested in an overview of what is happening and an exploration of what all of this does, does not, might, and might not mean, I would highly recommend reading this article and listening to this podcast from the folks at The Living Church.)
On a more personal level, I processed some of how I am thinking about these things as a Priest in the Anglican Communion in an essay published today. In it I share how turning to three great (old) texts—instead of constantly searching for news updates and analysis—has been an encouraging and edifying practice.
These three texts include:
Isaiah 58
De Unitae Ecclesiae, by St. Augustine
Leaf by Niggle, by J.R.R. Tolkien
The essay is also a pretty decent overview of some of what originally attracted me to and now keeps me in the Anglican family, warts and all.
