Tropical Storm Isaias Forms in Gulf, Expected to Strike Northern Gulf Coast as Hurricane by Friday

Tropical Storm Isaias formed Wednesday morning in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico and is forecast to rapidly strengthen into a dangerous hurricane before making landfall along the northern Gulf Coast. The National Hurricane Center said rapid strengthening is expected over the next one to two days, with the storm potentially peaking as a Category 2 hurricane with sustained winds of 110 mph by Thursday night or early Friday. As of Wednesday, Isaias carried sustained winds of 40 mph and was located approximately 600 miles south of the mouth of the Mississippi River.
The storm's projected path takes it east above Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula before turning sharply northward toward the Gulf Coast, bringing flooding rain, powerful winds, storm surge, and the potential for tornadoes to areas stretching from southern Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle. Hurricane and storm surge watches — warnings of 74 mph or stronger winds and life-threatening coastal flooding within 48 hours — were expected to be issued for parts of the northern Gulf Coast on Wednesday. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 25 counties ahead of the storm, directing residents to prepare disaster plans and stock emergency supply kits while state teams staged generators, fuel, food, water, and flood barriers near Tallahassee and Santa Rosa.
Energy companies operating in the Gulf are also taking protective measures. Shell announced it is evacuating nonessential personnel from six offshore platforms, and BP said it is removing nonessential workers and securing its offshore facilities. The precautions reflect the significant industrial footprint in the Gulf that stands to be disrupted by a major storm event.
Isaias is on track to become the first hurricane of the Atlantic season, ending a record-long stretch without one that has been attributed in part to a likely record-strong El Niño suppressing tropical activity through elevated wind shear. While warm Gulf waters are providing ample fuel for the storm's intensification, higher wind shear near the northern Gulf Coast could still weaken the system before landfall. Forecasters cautioned that the storm's exact track and intensity at landfall remain uncertain, and urged all residents along the Gulf Coast from Louisiana to Florida's Big Bend region to monitor forecasts closely.
