Democrats Eye Red-State Senate Seats but Lack Funds to Compete Across Expanded Map

Democratic Senate candidates and outside groups are reporting competitive polling in deeply Republican states including Mississippi, Florida, South Carolina, Kansas and Texas, sparking debate within the party over whether to invest significantly beyond its traditional battleground states in the final weeks of the midterm election cycle. Party strategists and campaign committees acknowledge they do not have sufficient funds to both defend core competitive seats and make major financial plays in states that have long been considered out of reach.
American Bridge PAC announced Wednesday it is deploying $22.7 million across roughly 80 House and Senate races, including $2.1 million in Mississippi, $2.5 million in Florida, $630,000 in South Carolina and $410,000 in Kansas, primarily through billboard advertising targeting rising costs and economic hardship. American Bridge 21st Century President Pat Dennis said the investments reflect a long-term strategy to build a durable Democratic majority in new territory, while acknowledging such shifts do not happen in a single election cycle.
Mississippi Democratic Senate nominee Scott Colom called on national party organizations to direct more resources to his state, arguing that voters there have been squeezed particularly hard by high gas prices and that the cost of advertising in Mississippi is relatively low. He contended that competitive polling demonstrates Democrats can win if they can get their message out, and accused the national party of historically ignoring the state.
Democrats are already spending in several states President Donald Trump carried by double-digit margins in 2024, including Alaska, Iowa, Ohio and Texas, stretching available resources further. A senior Democratic operative working on Senate races, speaking anonymously to discuss internal strategy, said national committees are in a belt-tightening posture and that funds are insufficient to simultaneously protect must-win seats and chase the next ring of competitive opportunities.
The tension reflects a recurring dilemma for the party: competitive polling in unexpected states generates pressure to invest, but past cycles have demonstrated that strong numbers do not always translate into wins when financial resources are spread thin. The decisions made in the coming weeks will determine whether Democrats pursue a narrow path to a Senate majority or gamble on a broader map with uncertain returns.
