Trump Scores Major Primary Wins, Ousts Massie in Most Expensive House Primary in History
nbcnews.com | kpbs.org

President Donald Trump extended his grip on Republican Party politics Tuesday as voters in Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, and Oregon held primary elections. The night's most significant result came in Kentucky's 4th Congressional District, where Rep. Thomas Massie was defeated by Trump-backed Navy SEAL veteran Ed Gallrein by a margin of roughly 10 percentage points, ending the tenure of one of the House's most vocal Trump critics.

The Kentucky race became the most expensive House primary in American history, with a total of $33 million spent on television advertising, according to ad-tracking firm AdImpact. Trump and his allies directed a substantial portion of that spending against Massie, whom the president had targeted over disagreements on issues including the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files. Trump described Gallrein as a candidate with 'a big, beautiful brain,' saying he needed only a 'warm body' to replace Massie.

Tuesday's results followed Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy's primary loss in Louisiana on Saturday, and came the same night that Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger failed to advance to a runoff in the Georgia governor's race. Raffensperger, who refused Trump's 2020 request to overturn Georgia's presidential election results, joins a growing list of Republicans whose careers have been cut short after crossing the former and current president. In the Georgia Republican Senate primary, candidates competed to align themselves as closely as possible with Trump ahead of a June 16 runoff between the top two vote-getters.

In other results Tuesday, Jim Kingston won the Republican primary in Georgia's 1st Congressional District, Houston Gaines won in Georgia's 10th District, and Christine Drazan won the Republican primary for Oregon governor. Georgia Supreme Court Justice Charles Bethel also won reelection, defeating challenger Miracle Rankin.

Despite Trump's continued dominance in Republican primaries, analysts note the contests carry different implications for the general election. Georgia, which has two Democratic U.S. senators and a competitive statewide electorate, presents a different landscape than Alabama, a reliably conservative state. Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia is considered a top Republican target in the fall, but Trump's approval ratings — particularly on the economy — remain below 50 percent in national polls, posing a potential liability for Republican candidates in competitive districts and states.
