Ukraine Strikes Moscow Region as Trump Halts Iran Attack Plans, Citing Pending Deal
Associated Press | usatoday.com

Ukraine launched one of its largest drone offensives of the war on Sunday, with Russian authorities reporting their air defenses intercepted 1,054 Ukrainian drones in a single 24-hour period. The attacks killed three people near Moscow, injured 12 others, damaged apartment buildings and private homes, and temporarily forced several Moscow airports to suspend operations. One drone struck the grounds of Sheremetyevo International Airport without causing damage, while another hit an oil storage tank, igniting a blaze visible for miles.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy framed the strikes as direct retaliation for relentless Russian missile and drone attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities in recent days. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 81 drones were intercepted by the capital's air defenses between late Saturday and early Sunday, and a drone hit the territory of a Moscow refinery without halting production. The scale and reach of the Ukrainian strikes made it increasingly difficult for the Kremlin to present the conflict as a distant war with no impact on Russian civilian life.
Separately, President Donald Trump on Monday called off a planned military strike against Iran, citing ongoing negotiations over a potential agreement. In a Truth Social post, Trump directed Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth and senior defense officials to stand down from a scheduled attack but ordered them to remain prepared for a 'full, large scale assault' if an acceptable deal is not reached. Trump said any agreement must include a prohibition on nuclear weapons for Iran.
Iranian officials did not immediately confirm the existence of a pending deal and earlier on Monday stated that their right to enrich uranium is non-negotiable. Sen. Lindsey Graham, a top Trump ally, said any agreement reached between the United States and Iran must come before Congress for approval, drawing a comparison to the Obama-era Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. Graham outlined U.S. negotiating objectives as including a full halt to uranium enrichment, seizure of Iran's existing nuclear material, and an end to Iranian support for militant groups.
Both situations underscore the volatile state of international security as diplomatic efforts proceed in parallel with active military operations. The Ukraine-Russia war is now in its fifth year, and despite recent statements from both Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin suggesting the conflict may be nearing an end, the pace of strikes on both sides has not slowed. The outcome of Iran negotiations remains uncertain, with a critical deadline implied by Trump's warning and Congress signaling it intends to assert a role in any final agreement.
