Pentagon Chief Overrules Army, Clears Helicopter Crews Who Hovered Near Kid Rock's Tennessee Home

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Tuesday lifted the suspension of two U.S. Army Apache helicopter crews who flew close to musician Kid Rock's Nashville-area home during a training mission on March 28, declaring on social media that there would be "no punishment, no investigation" and telling the crews to "carry on, patriots." The announcement came within hours of the Army confirming it had suspended the aircrews pending a review of whether they had complied with FAA regulations, aviation safety protocols, and required approval procedures. The helicopters, AH-64 Apaches from the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, were filmed hovering alongside Kid Rock's swimming pool while the entertainer clapped, saluted, and raised his fist.
Kid Rock, whose legal name is Robert Ritchie, posted two videos of the encounter on social media Saturday, where they have been viewed more than 10 million times. The posts included the caption "God Bless America and all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to defend her," along with profanity-laced criticism of California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat and frequent critic of President Donald Trump. Speaking to local television station WKRN on Monday, Kid Rock said it is not unusual for helicopters from Fort Campbell to fly near his property, adding that he had previously told pilots they were welcome to pass by his home, which he calls the Southern White House and has built to resemble the White House.
President Trump, asked about the suspensions Tuesday at an executive order signing ceremony, said the crews "probably shouldn't have been doing it" and that "you're not supposed to be playing games," but stopped short of calling for discipline. He added, in a lighter tone, "They like Kid Rock. I like Kid Rock. Maybe they were trying to defend him, I don't know." Army spokesman Maj. Jonathon Bless said the training flight over the Nashville area was entirely coincidental with a "No Kings" protest against Trump taking place downtown that same day.
The episode has drawn attention to the chain of command between the Pentagon and the Army, with Hegseth's public intervention effectively ending a formal military review before it could conclude. The Army had stated Monday that aviators "must adhere to strict safety standards, professionalism, and established flight regulations" and that appropriate action would be taken if violations were found. As of Tuesday evening, the Army had not responded publicly to Hegseth's directive or clarified the status of its earlier administrative review.
