Trump Threatens Iran Infrastructure as War Expands, Civilian Casualties Mount
Associated Press | theguardian.com

President Donald Trump on Monday threatened to destroy Iran's energy resources and vital infrastructure, including desalination plants, if a deal to end the ongoing U.S.-Iran war is not reached soon. Separately, video shared by Trump without comment on Tuesday appeared to show a major explosion near Isfahan, one of three uranium enrichment sites previously bombed during the conflict's opening phase in June. Iran has not formally acknowledged the strike.

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi insisted Tuesday that Tehran's military operations target only U.S. forces, addressing his remarks specifically to Saudi Arabia after Iranian strikes have hit civilian targets across Gulf Arab nations. Araghchi shared an image purportedly showing damage to an American aircraft at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia, urging Arab states to expel U.S. forces from the region. Two Indonesian United Nations peacekeepers serving with UNIFIL in southern Lebanon also died Tuesday during escort operations, with two others seriously wounded; the Indonesian Ministry of Defense said the exact cause remains under investigation.

The war, which escalated following a 12-day exchange between Iran and Israel in June, has continued to spread across the region despite repeated declarations of victory by Trump. Israel reported four additional soldiers killed Tuesday in its ongoing Lebanon offensive, raising its total military death toll in the conflict to 10. Isfahan, site of Tuesday's reported explosion, is believed to hold a portion of Iran's highly enriched uranium, and U.S. officials have previously suggested the possibility of seizing it with ground forces.

Analysts and critics have noted a widening gap between Trump's public declarations and conditions on the ground. Trump has repeatedly claimed victory in the conflict at campaign-style events and in White House appearances since March, statements that have drawn scrutiny as fighting continues to intensify. The war is being closely watched for its potential impact on global energy markets and regional stability, with Gulf Arab states reportedly pressing Washington to sustain its military campaign even as Iranian strikes have struck targets within their borders.
