Trump Nominates Oklahoma Law Enforcement Veteran Lance Schroyer to Lead ICE
CBS News Colorado
|
|
President Donald Trump announced Saturday the nomination of Lance Schroyer to serve as director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, tapping the Oklahoma law enforcement veteran to permanently lead the agency at the center of his administration's sweeping deportation campaign. Trump made the announcement via Truth Social, calling Schroyer a patriot with decades of operational experience and praising his record locking up what the president described as "the worst of the worst."
Schroyer brings more than 29 years of law enforcement experience to the nomination, including service as a U.S. Marine and a career with the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety, where he reached the rank of major over the Emergency Services Unit. He currently serves as senior advisor to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, a former U.S. senator from Oklahoma. Mullin endorsed the pick publicly, noting that Schroyer had run large-scale operations and worked alongside state and federal partners to remove undocumented immigrants from Oklahoma under the 287g program, a federal initiative that partners local and state law enforcement agencies with ICE.
The Department of Homeland Security described Schroyer as a specialist in interagency collaboration, complex tactical planning, and constitutional safeguards in policy implementation. Both Trump and Mullin called on the Senate to move quickly to confirm the nomination, underscoring the administration's emphasis on accelerating its immigration enforcement agenda.
The nomination highlights a prolonged leadership vacuum at ICE, which has operated without a Senate-confirmed director for nearly a decade. The last confirmed director left the post in early 2017, at the close of the Obama administration, leaving the agency reliant on a succession of roughly a dozen acting directors. The most recent acting director, Todd Lyons, who oversaw the administration's deportation crackdown for more than a year, announced his departure in April; David Venturella has served as interim chief since June 1.
If confirmed, Schroyer would take the helm of an agency that has been at the forefront of one of the most aggressive immigration enforcement efforts in recent American history. His confirmation hearing, should it be scheduled, is expected to draw significant scrutiny from both supporters and critics of the administration's immigration policies.
