U.S. and Iran Agree to Stand Down After Exchange of Strikes, Nuclear Talks Remain on Track
bbc.com | abcnews.com

The United States and Iran have agreed to halt military strikes and restore free passage through the Strait of Hormuz following a series of escalating attacks that threatened to unravel a ceasefire signed less than two weeks ago, U.S. officials confirmed Monday. A senior Trump administration official told ABC News that technical talks aimed at implementing a memorandum of understanding between the two countries are still planned for the coming days and that no negotiations have been canceled.

The latest round of hostilities began Thursday when an Iranian projectile struck a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. retaliated over the weekend with strikes on multiple targets inside Iran, which U.S. Central Command described as a direct response to continued aggression against commercial shipping. Iran then launched missiles and drones at U.S. bases in Kuwait and Bahrain on Sunday, but U.S. officials said all projectiles were shot down, intercepted, or failed to reach their targets, and that there were no American casualties or damage to U.S. facilities.

The exchange threatened to collapse a 14-point Memorandum of Understanding signed by both countries on June 17, which called for an immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts. Under that agreement, Iran had committed to using its best efforts to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz at no charge for a period of 60 days. Delegations from both countries met last weekend at the Bürgenstock resort in Switzerland to begin negotiations on a broader war-ending deal.

The Strait of Hormuz carries a significant share of global oil and gas shipments and had been effectively closed by Tehran after the U.S. and Israel launched major strikes on Iran at the end of February. President Donald Trump announced what he called major combat operations against Iran on Feb. 28, with joint U.S.-Israeli strikes targeting military, government, and infrastructure sites across the country.

Complications also emerged on a separate front, where an Israel-Lebanon framework agreement brokered by the U.S. on Friday faces resistance. Hezbollah's leader rejected the accord and accused the Beirut government of undermining Lebanese sovereignty, while the Israeli military on Sunday struck a tunnel it said was more than 200 meters long and 25 meters deep in southern Lebanon, containing hundreds of weapons and several launch silos. Israel said it notified the United States in advance of the strike, and Iran has stated that a cessation of hostilities in Lebanon is a prerequisite for any broader regional ceasefire to hold.
