Severe Weather, Record Heat Disrupt America's 250th Anniversary Celebrations Nationwide

The United States marked its 250th anniversary of independence on Saturday under a combination of severe thunderstorms, record-breaking heat and political controversy, with celebrations disrupted from Washington, D.C., to Boston and multiple cities across Pennsylvania and Connecticut. Temperatures on the National Mall reached 102 degrees Fahrenheit, forcing the cancellation of several parades and contributing to at least 51 heat-related illnesses among the estimated thousands who attended the Trump administration's flagship "Freedom 250" event. Federal officials reported a total of 86 people were treated for various ailments at the National Mall, with 34 transported to area hospitals.
President Donald Trump's keynote address at the National Mall was delayed nearly two hours after a thunderstorm prompted authorities to evacuate the event site, with spectators sheltering in nearby museums and federal buildings before crowds were allowed to return. Trump ultimately took the stage shortly after 11:15 p.m. Eastern Time, following a performance by country singer Lee Greenwood. In his remarks, Trump described the milestone as "one of the most joyous and glorious" in the nation's history, paid tribute to veterans including World War II survivors, and used the occasion to advocate for the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship and identification to vote. He also renewed attacks on the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, calling it "like a cancer" that must be "cut out."
Weather disruptions extended well beyond the capital. Celebrations were cancelled outright in Hartford, Connecticut, and in Harrisburg and Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh temporarily suspended its festivities after lightning was detected within eight miles of Point State Park, later reopening gates at 8:15 p.m. and rescheduling fireworks for 10 p.m. In Boston, spectators were briefly ordered to seek shelter before events resumed, while New York City moved its Macy's fireworks display forward to avoid incoming storms, drawing large crowds without significant weather interference. Several small fires broke out on the Brooklyn Bridge walkway during the New York fireworks show, though fire crews extinguished the blazes and no injuries were reported.
The Washington event drew additional scrutiny after members of the white nationalist organization Patriot Front arrived in the capital, with hundreds of its members traveling into the city on Metro trains. Local police reported no incidents of violence. Past presidents have traditionally avoided in-person appearances at Fourth of July commemorations on the Mall, but Trump's administration has taken direct control of the 250th anniversary programming through its Freedom 250 group, which has largely sidelined a nonpartisan commission established by Congress in 2016 to oversee the semiquincentennial. Critics have noted that much of the National Mall was fenced off for the event, restricting general public access.

I love how at the doctor's office they make you fill out those forms. 'Have you had any of the following?' They list like 200 diseases. I always want to check all of them just to see what happens.
