Trump Warns of 'Communist Menace' in Mount Rushmore Speech Marking U.S. 250th Anniversary

President Donald Trump delivered a half-hour address Friday night at Mount Rushmore in Keystone, South Dakota, on the eve of the nation's 250th Independence Day anniversary, warning that the United States faces a resurgent 'communist menace' from within its borders. Speaking beneath the illuminated granite faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt, Trump declared that communism is 'the enemy of the Constitution' and a 'mortal threat to American liberty,' drawing comparisons to the September 11 attacks and World War II. Thousands of attendees who had won a lottery for entry watched the speech, which was followed by a fireworks display over the monument.
Trump framed the ideological threat in part around immigration, suggesting that certain undocumented arrivals and left-wing political figures embrace ideas 'totally opposed' to American values. 'You can be a communist, or you can be a patriot. You cannot be both,' he told the crowd. He also used the address to call for abolishing the Senate filibuster and passing the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and photo identification at the polls, arguing these measures were necessary for Republican success in the November midterm elections.
The speech came amid a string of recent primary victories by democratic socialist candidates in New York, Colorado and Texas, which Trump has publicly characterized as a leftist threat to American traditions. Trump also briefly addressed the ongoing U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran, stating that Tehran is 'dying to settle' and that Washington had granted a pause in hostilities for the state funeral of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a strike at the outset of the war. The address was delivered against a backdrop of voter concern over persistent inflation and elevated energy prices tied to that conflict.
Reaction to the speech fell along partisan lines. Republican strategist Eli Bremer told Al Jazeera that portions of the address were broadly patriotic enough to have been delivered by Ronald Reagan, though he acknowledged the divide between American left and right 'has really never been wider.' Democratic strategist Ameshia Cross argued Trump was reacting to a younger generation of Democrats winning elections across the country and that the speech reflected, in her words, 'a president who sees his grip on America steadily slipping away.' Cross also noted the address came days after the Supreme Court ruled against the administration in a case involving birthright citizenship.
Trump closed the speech by calling the anniversary 'the beginning of the golden age of America.' He made no mention of longstanding reports, dating to his first term, that he had expressed interest in adding his own face to the Mount Rushmore monument, a step that would require an act of Congress.
