Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., Dies at 71 After Sudden Illness
nbcnews.com | CBS News Colorado | Associated Press

U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina and one of President Donald Trump's closest congressional allies, died Saturday evening at the age of 71. His office confirmed the death in a statement posted to social media, saying Graham passed away from a "brief and sudden illness" and asking the public to respect his family's privacy. Emergency scanner audio obtained by NBC News indicated that paramedics were dispatched to Graham's Capitol Hill home Saturday night for a cardiac arrest call, with CPR reported in progress.

Tributes poured in Sunday from political figures at home and abroad. President Trump described Graham on Truth Social as "one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known" and called him "a true American Patriot." Senate Majority Leader John Thune said his "heart is heavy" over the loss of his friend and colleague, while South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster called Graham "the fiercest of fighters for South Carolina and America." Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he and his wife were grieving alongside the American people, calling Graham "one of Israel's greatest friends," and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he was "deeply saddened," noting that Graham had visited Ukraine ten times during the war and had met with him in Kyiv as recently as Friday, July 10.

Graham, born July 9, 1955, in Central, South Carolina, had a career in public service spanning more than three decades. He served as a military lawyer in the Air Force before entering politics, first winning a seat in the South Carolina House of Representatives, then the U.S. House, and finally the Senate in 2002, where he was reelected three additional times. He was chairman of the Senate Budget Committee at the time of his death and had secured his party's nomination for a fifth Senate term just weeks earlier, with a general election scheduled for November.

Graham was widely known as a hawkish voice on foreign policy, a strong advocate for NATO, and a persistent critic of Russia's war in Ukraine. A top staffer told NBC News there had been no indication Graham was feeling unwell before his death; he had been scheduled to appear on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday, a program on which he had appeared 63 times. Under South Carolina law, Gov. McMaster will appoint a replacement to fill Graham's Senate seat through January 3, and the state Republican Party must select a new general election nominee, with a special primary expected by August 11.
