Trump Threatens to 'Decimate' Iran After Assassination Calls at Khamenei Funeral; Talks Continue

President Donald Trump issued a sweeping military threat against Iran late Friday after mourners at the funeral of slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei displayed banners openly calling for Trump's death alongside that of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump declared that "1,000 missiles are locked and loaded and aimed at the Islamic Republic of Iran" and warned that U.S. forces stood ready "to completely decimate and destroy all areas of Iran" should any attempt on his life be carried out. The threat came amid an Israeli intelligence warning, reported by CNN and The Wall Street Journal, of a fresh and highly specific Iranian plot to assassinate the president, which reportedly prompted the U.S. Secret Service to reroute Trump's aircraft while he was departing a NATO summit in Türkiye earlier in the week.
The funeral for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, 86, who was killed in a U.S. airstrike on Feb. 28 that opened the current conflict, concluded this week after a dayslong ceremony that moved his body through cities in both Iran and Iraq. Iran's new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei — son of the slain leader — issued a statement Saturday pledging to "exact revenge" for his father's death and the deaths of what he called martyrs of two wars, a reference widely interpreted to mean the recent conflicts with the United States and Israel. He warned that those responsible, whose "names are fully documented from the top to the bottom of the ladder," would not die peacefully.
The current crisis was triggered Tuesday when Iran struck commercial tankers near the Strait of Hormuz, breaking a ceasefire and prompting U.S. airstrikes on Iran for two consecutive nights across multiple provinces. Iran's Ministry of Health reported 17 people killed and 115 injured in those strikes. Senior U.S. officials, speaking anonymously, said the attacks were carried out by a rogue faction of Iranian hard-liners attempting to sabotage the ceasefire, though Iran's government has insisted its leadership is unified under the new supreme leader and accused Washington of violating the memorandum of understanding signed in June, specifically a clause prohibiting new U.S. sanctions or additional troop deployments to the region.
Despite the escalating rhetoric and renewed military exchanges, diplomatic channels remain open. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Muscat, Oman, on Saturday to discuss the Strait of Hormuz and broader peace terms with Omani counterparts, while Qatari mediators traveled to Tehran. The U.S. negotiating team — led by Vice President JD Vance, Jared Kushner, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff — was expected to participate in parallel talks in Oman. Iran's parliament speaker and lead negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf stated categorically that Tehran would not surrender but called ending the war a global priority, signaling that both sides remain engaged even as ultimatums mount.
