U.S. Rescues Second F-15 Crew Member From Iranian Territory as War Spreads Across Region

A missing U.S. service member has been rescued from Iranian territory after an F-15E Strike Eagle was shot down by Iran on Friday, President Donald Trump announced early Sunday in a social media post. Trump said the aviator, who is injured but expected to recover, had taken refuge in what he described as 'the treacherous mountains of Iran.' The rescue operation involved dozens of aircraft and continuous aerial surveillance over a 24-hour period, according to Trump. A second crew member from the same aircraft had been recovered earlier.
The downed F-15E was the first U.S. aircraft to crash in Iranian territory since the conflict began in late February. Iran had offered a reward for anyone who turned in the 'enemy pilot,' underscoring the high stakes of the search-and-rescue operation. The Israeli military separately announced Sunday that its air defenses had been activated and that recent strikes focused on Iranian air defense, drone, and missile systems, following the downing of two U.S. warplanes.
Iran extended its attacks Sunday to Gulf state infrastructure, with drone strikes igniting fires at multiple Kuwait Petroleum Corporation facilities, including sites operated by the Kuwait National Petroleum Company and the Petrochemical Industries Company. Bahrain's state-run petrochemical facilities were also reported struck. The United Arab Emirates said 60 projectiles were fired at the country, including nine ballistic missiles, 50 drones, and one cruise missile, bringing the total projectiles targeting the UAE since the war's start to more than 2,700.
Diplomatic pressure mounted Sunday as Oman hosted talks between deputy foreign ministers and experts from the United States and Iran to discuss proposals for ensuring passage through the Strait of Hormuz. The meeting came two days before a deadline set by Trump, who threatened 'devastating consequences' if Iran fails to open the strategically critical waterway by Monday. Oman has historically served as an intermediary between Washington and Tehran.
On the humanitarian and infrastructure front, an internet monitoring group reported Sunday that Iran's internet blackout has now lasted 37 consecutive days, surpassing all other nation-scale shutdowns on record. Journalists from the Associated Press witnessed widespread destruction at a Shiite religious complex in the northwestern Iranian city of Zanjan, and Lebanon's Health Ministry reported casualties after Israeli strikes hit the town of Kfar Hatta near Sidon, a location sheltering large numbers of internally displaced people.
