Trump Threatens Iran With Strikes on Power Plants, Oil Seizure as Pilot Rescue Highlights Lingering Risks
bbc.com
|
|
President Donald Trump claimed a major victory after the second crew member of a downed U.S. F-15 fighter jet was recovered from Iranian territory, declaring the rescue demonstrated "overwhelming air dominance and superiority." The operation involved establishing a forward airfield and refueling point inside contested Iranian territory, holding the position for several hours while damaged aircraft were destroyed and replacements dispatched.
Despite Trump's triumphant framing, defense analysts and Washington sources who spoke to the BBC described a more complicated picture. The loss of two aircraft and damage to at least one helicopter from hostile fire indicated that Iranian military capabilities remain intact in some form, even after weeks of heavy U.S. and Israeli strikes and Trump's earlier assertion that Tehran had "no anti-aircraft equipment" left. Particular concern centered on man-portable air defense systems, or Manpads, which are shoulder-launched missiles effective against low-flying aircraft and difficult to locate and destroy from the air.
Trump simultaneously issued sharp new threats against Iran over the weekend, warning in an expletive-laden post on Truth Social that the Iranian regime would be "living in Hell" if the Strait of Hormuz was not opened to navigation. He also told Fox News he might move to "take" Iran's oil and threatened to begin striking Iranian power plants and bridges if a diplomatic agreement was not reached, setting what he described as a self-imposed deadline for further escalation.
The president also struck a conciliatory note in separate remarks to reporters, suggesting a deal with Iran could be close at hand. Military planners have presented options to the White House that include an airborne or amphibious operation against Kharg Island, Iran's key oil export terminal, and potential seizure of highly enriched uranium stored at fortified underground sites, though the recent aircraft losses may complicate the calculus around such operations. Human rights organizations have warned that strikes on power plants and civilian infrastructure could constitute war crimes and cause widespread harm to Iranian civilians.
The conflicting signals from Washington leave the strategic direction of the conflict uncertain. Mediators are reportedly seeking a ceasefire, but no agreement has been announced. The outcome of the pilot recovery mission may cut both ways in internal deliberations — reinforcing either the risks of deeper military engagement or confidence in U.S. forces' ability to operate inside Iranian territory under hostile conditions.
