Trump Supporters Back Iran War, Tell Pope Leo to 'Stay in His Lane' as Pontiff Denies Seeking Debate With President

Pope Leo XIV and President Donald Trump remain locked in a public dispute over the U.S. military campaign against Iran, even as the pontiff sought Saturday to soften perceptions of the clash. Speaking to reporters aboard the papal plane during his 11-day African tour, Leo said it was "not in my interest at all" to debate Trump, and explained that remarks he delivered in Cameroon on Thursday — in which he denounced "tyrants" and war spending — had been written weeks before Trump began attacking him publicly.
Trump has targeted Leo repeatedly on Truth Social and in public statements, calling the Chicago-born pontiff "WEAK on crime" and "terrible on foreign policy," and accusing him — falsely, according to reporting — of wanting a nuclear-armed Iran. Leo has countered that Trump's threat to "annihilate Iranian civilization" was "truly unacceptable" and said he has "no fear of the Trump administration." Vice President JD Vance, a 2019 Catholic convert, also weighed in, saying Leo should "be careful" when speaking on matters of policy and invoking the theological concept of "just war theory" to suggest the military action could be morally justified.
Despite the high-profile clash between the leader of 1.4 billion Catholics and a president who has cultivated strong support among Christian conservatives, interviews with more than 20 Trump supporters at events in Las Vegas and Phoenix revealed little sign of divided loyalties. Catholic Trump backers repeatedly said the pope was overstepping his role, with one attendee telling NBC News the pontiff should "stay in your lane." Many supporters said Trump was right to use military force against Iran and within his authority to rebuff the pope's criticism.
The dispute has been further inflamed by a separate controversy in which Trump posted an AI-generated image of himself depicted as Jesus healing a sick man on Truth Social. Trump later deleted the image and claimed he believed it showed him as a Red Cross doctor. The episode drew additional criticism from Christian communities already unsettled by the administration's religious rhetoric, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's call for Americans to pray for U.S. military victory in Iran "in the name of Jesus Christ."
The standoff marks an unusual public rupture between the White House and the Vatican, with no signs of imminent resolution. Leo has vowed to continue speaking out for peace and dialogue, while Trump and his allies show no indication of softening their posture on Iran or their criticism of the pope. How the confrontation affects Trump's coalition of Christian conservatives and "America First" voters — two groups whose priorities do not always align — remains an open political question as the Iran conflict continues.
