Iran Reimoses Strait of Hormuz Restrictions, Fires on Tanker One Day After Declaring Waterway Open

Iran reversed course Saturday and reimposed military control over the Strait of Hormuz, just 24 hours after declaring the critical waterway open for commercial transit. The Iranian military's Khatam al-Anbiya joint command headquarters announced that "control of the Strait of Hormuz has returned to its previous state" and that the waterway is now under "strict management and control of the armed forces." Iranian Revolutionary Guard gunboats also fired on at least one tanker attempting to transit the strait, according to the British military's United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Center, which reported the vessel and crew were safe. The incident occurred approximately 20 nautical miles northeast of Oman, and no radio warning was issued before the gunboats opened fire.
Iran's military and political officials tied the reversal directly to the continued U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports. "Until America allows full freedom of navigation for vessels traveling from Iran to destinations and vice versa, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz will remain under strict control," Iran's military spokesperson said. Ebrahim Azizi, head of Iran's National Security Commission, accused the United States of "untrustworthiness" and said the closure was a response to "the enemy's new duplicity," adding that Trump had attempted to create "the impression of an agreement" through public statements. President Trump, speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, said a deal with Iran "is going to happen" and flatly rejected any Iranian restrictions or tolls on the strait.
The Strait of Hormuz is the world's most critical oil shipping chokepoint, with approximately 20 percent of global oil supply passing through it. The waterway had been contested since the United States imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports earlier in the week, with U.S. Central Command reporting that 21 ships had been turned back to Iran since the blockade began Monday. Iran's announcement Friday that the strait was open had triggered a sharp drop in oil prices, with U.S. crude falling 11.4 percent to $83.85 per barrel and international Brent crude sliding 9 percent to $90.38 per barrel before Saturday's reversal.
The situation now threatens to deepen a global energy crisis and raise the risk of renewed military conflict, even as diplomatic mediators have expressed confidence that a broader agreement remains within reach. A ceasefire between the United States and Iran is set to expire Wednesday, and Trump said Friday it may not be extended. Iran's Navy warned that "any breach of commitments by America will receive an appropriate response," while the Revolutionary Guard Corps said the strait's status would remain restricted "as long as the passage of vessels from Iran and to Iran is threatened."
