U.S.-Iran Talks in Dispute as Trump Claims Negotiations Underway, Tehran Denies Engagement
edition.cnn.com

U.S. President Donald Trump announced over the weekend that he called off a planned large-scale military strike against Iran following appeals from regional allies including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, as well as what he described as a request from Iran itself. Trump said Saturday that American and Iranian officials would meet for talks later that day, expressing optimism about reaching a swift agreement on the Strait of Hormuz and what he characterized as a broader deal on the denuclearization of Iran.
Iran's Foreign Ministry flatly contradicted Trump's account, stating that Tehran is not currently in negotiations with the United States and gave no indication that it had asked the president to stand down any planned strikes. Instead, Iranian spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Tehran is engaged in separate bilateral talks with Oman aimed at establishing a temporary, single-corridor safe passage for vessels through the Strait of Hormuz — a route that would serve the interests of both coastal states. Baghaei added that any such arrangement would not automatically lead to a full reopening of the strait.
The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical shipping lanes for oil and commercial cargo, has been at the center of the stop-start confrontation between Washington and Tehran. Shipping sources reported some vessel movement in the lane near the Omani coast, suggesting limited activity despite the diplomatic standoff. This is not the first instance during the current conflict in which Trump has threatened military action against Iran and subsequently reversed course.
A CNN exclusive added additional context to the tensions, reporting that a U.S. military officer sent an email to troops ahead of Trump's strike threats seeking what was described as new, creative and unconventional ways to pressure and punish Iran — a signal, according to the report, of the limited options available to the administration to compel Tehran into a deal on American terms. The contradictory public statements from Washington and Tehran leave the status of any diplomatic engagement deeply uncertain. Whether the Oman-brokered corridor arrangement could serve as a bridge to broader de-escalation between the U.S. and Iran remains an open question, with Iranian officials indicating they see no immediate need to engage directly with the United States.
