Trump-Backed Tennessee Congressman Ogles Loses Primary to Establishment-Backed Hatcher

|
Republican Rep. Andy Ogles of Tennessee lost his bid for reelection Thursday, defeated in the GOP primary for the redrawn 5th Congressional District by Charlie Hatcher, a former state agriculture commissioner and dairy farmer. Hatcher secured the Republican nomination despite a last-minute "tele-rally" appearance by President Trump on Ogles' behalf, and will face Democrat Chaz Molder, the mayor of Columbia, in the November general election.
Hatcher built his winning coalition around prominent establishment Republican figures, drawing endorsements from outgoing Gov. Bill Lee, former Gov. Bill Haslam, and former Trump cabinet member Sonny Perdue. Though Trump had backed Ogles, Hatcher closely aligned himself with the president throughout his campaign, describing Trump on his website as "the most impactful president of our lifetime." Hatcher narrowly defeated Ogles even in Maury County, Ogles' home turf.
Ogles had accumulated significant political baggage since winning his seat in 2022. He faced scrutiny for misrepresenting his professional background, filing incorrect and late campaign finance disclosures, making a disputed $230,000 personal loan to his own campaign, and publicly stating that "Muslims don't belong in American society." A federal investigation stemming from the financial disclosures was largely abandoned earlier this year, but the controversies contributed to eroding his standing with voters.
The race also unfolded against a backdrop of aggressive Republican redistricting in Tennessee. The state legislature redrew the 5th District map earlier this year, a move designed to bolster national GOP midterm efforts by splitting Memphis across multiple districts. The new district now stretches from parts of Williamson and Maury counties northwest through rural West Tennessee and down the Mississippi River into Memphis, significantly changing the electorate Ogles had originally represented.
With the Republican nomination secured, Hatcher is favored to win the deeply red district in November, though Molder enters the general election with more than $2.5 million in reserves. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee had previously committed to supporting Molder's campaign when he was running in the old, more competitive district, though the redrawn boundaries have made a Democratic victory considerably more difficult.
