Transgender News - March 14, 2026

The following items were shared by a member of another mailing list, and I wanted to share them here as well.

Federal prisons bar gender-affirming care for trans people by Beth Schwartzapfel, The Marshall Project on February 23, 2026 at the 19th

"Under a new policy released by the Bureau of Prisons on February 19th, the federal prison system will stop providing gender-affirming medical or social transition care. The new policy states that trans people will not have access to surgery, clothing or toiletry items that align with their gender identity. People behind bars on hormone medications will be forced to taper off them. Instead, the primary treatments will be therapy and psychiatric medications like antidepressants."

4th Circuit Rules That States Can Compel Trans Adults To "Appreciate Their Sex" Via Care Bans by Erin Reed on March 11, 2026 at Erin In The Morning

"On Tuesday, an all-Republican and mostly Trump-appointed panel of the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that states can exclude gender-affirming surgery from Medicaid coverage, allowing West Virginia's exclusion to return to full effect. In doing so, the panel extended the Supreme Court's decision in Skrmetti—which held that transgender youth care bans were constitutional—to transgender adults, the first federal appeals court in the country to do so, and directly states that adult care bans are legal. The court also took a significant step toward ruling that laws targeting transgender adult care would be constitutional. In a footnote, the court states, "While Skrmetti involved sex-change treatments for minors, disagreement among experts about the efficacy and necessity of transgender surgeries extends to treatment of gender dysphoria in adults." "

Administration for Children and Families Rescinding “Designated Placement Requirements” for LGBTQIA2S youth in foster care. by John Kelly on March 3, 2026 at The Imprint

"The proposal would remove the “Designated Placement Requirements” that previously required child welfare agencies receiving federal funds to ensure that affirming placements are available for LGBTQIA2S youth in foster care. These protections were created to ensure that young people who identify as LGBTQIA2S could access foster placements that affirm their identity, provide trained caregivers, and connect them with appropriate mental health and community resources. "

Action Item: Leave a public comment on the proposal. As usual, please refrain from sharing personal info you wouldn’t be comfortable being public, nor the personal identifiable information of LGBTQIA+ people in your life.
