Transgender News - December 20, 2025
This week saw a number of attacks against gender affirming care for minors. While Marjorie Taylor Greene’s bill is likely to be stopped in the Senate, it is an example of the fear mongering that has been used against Transgender children seeking gender affirming care. The proposed rules by RFK Jr. and Doctor Oz about Medicare funding are another method to attack the rights of children to exist as they are.
All available evidence shows that children who are allowed access to gender affirming care are healthier. Those that are blocked from gender affirming care have worse mental health and some end their own lives. These restrictions aren't about protecting children they're about control and eliminating Transgender individuals.
Marjorie Taylor Greene’s bill criminalizing gender-affirming care for minors passes with Democrats’ support by Christopher Wiggins on December 17, 2025 at the Advocate
"The legislation, introduced by Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia and titled the Protect Children’s Innocence Act, would impose felony penalties of up to 10 years in prison on physicians who provide puberty blockers, hormone therapy, or surgical care to patients under 18. The bill would also expose parents and others who consent to or help minors access that care to criminal liability."
"The vote represents a watershed moment in the national fight over transgender rights, transforming what has largely been a state-level effort to ban gender-affirming care for minors into a federal mandate with sweeping implications for medical practice, family autonomy, and constitutional law. Democrats in the Senate are expected to reject the measure and attempt to block or delay its passage."
RFK Jr. and Dr. Oz announce moves to ban gender-affirming care for young people by Selena Simmons-Duffin on December 18, 2025 at NPR
"The ban takes the form of two new proposed rules from Medicaid and Medicare. The first prohibits doctors and hospitals from receiving federal Medicaid reimbursement for gender-affirming care provided to transgender patients younger than age 18. Medicaid is the health care program that covers low-income Americans."
"The second rule blocks all Medicaid and Medicare funding for any services at hospitals that provide pediatric gender-affirming care. Virtually every hospital in the country takes Medicare, which covers older Americans and the disabled. Because hospitals rely on Medicare, the rule would have a wide-ranging effect."
RFK Jr. Could Defund Your Hospital if He Doesn’t Get His Way on Trans Health Care by Katie Herchenroeder and Julia Métraux on December 18, 2025 at Mother Jones
"The most chilling of the new regulatory actions would include cutting off federal Medicaid and Medicare funding from hospitals that provide gender affirming care to young people and prohibiting federal Medicaid dollars from being used to fund such procedures. Nearly every hospital in the country accepts this type of federal funding and relies on it to operate."
Rep. Sarah McBride makes rare personal remarks in opposing anti-trans bills by Julianne McShane on December 17, 2025 at MS Now
“I didn’t have the courage to come out until I was 21,” McBride continued, “and that means 21 years of pain, 21 years of unwavering homesickness that only went away when I was able to get the care that I needed. And my biggest regret in life is that I never had a childhood without that pain.”
