Editor's Note: The disability community is increasingly preferring to use identity-first language (disabled person) in place of person-first language (person with a disability). This is because many in the community view disability as being a core component of identity, much like race and gender. Some members of the community, such as people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, still prefer person-first language. Both should be considered valid. "Many of the Trump administration’s recent cuts target or disproportionately impact people with disabilities. For example, a large share of the federal workforce, 23% based on 2024 data, identifies as persons with a disability, according to the Center for American Progress, meaning that they may have been heavily impacted by federal staffing cuts. The U.S. Department of Labor has also proposed a rollback of hiring rules that protect people with disabilities from ableist practices."
