Hebrew V: Advanced Hebrew Readings
Jacques Boulet
This summer I will serve as a guide to some fascinating texts of the Old Testament in the original Hebrew. The course is Hebrew V, but it has been designed so that a hard-working student with only three semesters of Hebrew could also join the adventure.
We will do a small amount of Hebrew composition and dive into a few select grammar topics, but on the whole, we will simply focus on reading passages and increasing our ability to interpret the ancient text using all the available tools, ancient and modern.
Our route will take us from a starting point in simpler prose texts like Ezekiel 3 and move us toward more challenging poetic texts like Habakkuk 3. We will slow down to explore Jacob’s blessings to Judah and to Joseph in Genesis 49, and at the end of the course we will dip our toes into some Dead Sea Scrolls, including the Great Isaiah Scroll, the most impressive of the biblical manuscripts found at Qumran.
Isaiah 14-16, Manuscript 1QIsaa (ca. 125 B.C.)
History and Principles of Reformed and Presbyterian Churches
Bernard Westerveld
This course is designed to prepare men to serve a Reformed or Presbyterian church, such as the Reformed Church of Quebec, as pastors, but also as elders or deacons.
Students will learn about the history of the Reformed and Presbyterian churches in Europe and North America, particularly in relation to the mission in Quebec. One component of the course will also help them understand the relationship of the Reformed Church to the mission of the evangelical churches in Quebec. Finally, students will explore the principles of the Reformed churches, examining the activities of the local congregation and presbyterian church government.
Urbanization and Evangelization – in action!
Jean Zoellner
Hello Farel supporters,
We wanted to give you some news about us and our ministry since I stepped down as director of Farel in February 2021.
We are still in Montreal and involved in the life and ministry of St-Jean Reformed Church. We serve primarily in the area of discipleship, doing evangelism to non-believers and supporting more mature Christians. We use a twelve week Discipleship Course that is repeated a few times a year. In addition, I preach fairly regularly, I make pastoral visits, and we have people over to our home.
Daryl is involved in the artistic life of Montreal through “art hives”. These are weekly meetings in social centers which make the visual arts accessible to people who otherwise would not be able to do so. These meetings play a beneficial role in the mental health of people who suffer from loneliness.
I also continue to teach at the B.Th/M.Div level, either at the FTE or in Africa. In April, I will be teaching a course on preaching in Rwanda (for Congolese pastors), and this summer I will be teaching a course in Montreal on evangelism and urbanization.
Thank you for all your prayers and support for Farel.
Fraternally yours, Jean Zoellner
Thank you for your support, fellowship, and prayers.
