the lingering dusk
the lingering dusk
This month I made a small sequencer built around some very simple interactions. There are launchers which fire projectiles periodically on a specific beat. Each time a projectile is fired it triggers a note, and each time it turns a corner or exits an interchange it also triggers a note. There are four notes, corresponding to the four cardinal directions, and corners and launchers will rotate if you hit them on their back side.
A bunch of things are randomised based on the date, so you'll get a different collection of objects each day, a different scale and some other slight sonic variations.

Well my website didn't collapse when I put last month's here and then gone up there, so here's a link to run this month's one:

Mannequin Pussy's Tiny Desk Concert is pretty special:
"and if you are not careful, if you do not realise that this is a part of the plan that they have for us, it will start to tear away at you, and you will start to feel numb in a world where you should feel so alive because the world is beautiful. and you should not let them convince you otherwise."

hypervisibility by tehn:
"so at some point you think you know how to do things, that things will go a certain way because you did it before and it was a disaster so you did it again and it was a different disaster but this time you've thought of all of the past and potential disasters, but then also the rules just totally change and all sorts of things can happen that seemed inconceivable, both disasters but also miracles, both equally perplexing, and eventually it becomes just a pastime to classify events as disaster or miracle, until maybe a day is just, having coffee and seeing birds, and whatever happens next is, next"

Alexandra C. Dunn writing on Library technology in the age of generative AI:
"Software, like all things built to engage with the world, must change as the world changes. A documented set of rules or principles is a static object that cannot encapsulate all possible eventualities, and human judgment is required to determine how to address novel situations. Moreover, unless a system is intended to die with its original maintainers, new contributors must be recruited and acculturated into the project."
Wrestling turned me cis, then it turned me trans: Josephine Reisman with a beautiful piece of writing about wrestling and how a fundamental aspect of wrestling is selling your opponent's moves. It's part of your job to convey that this hurts, to be vulnerable in the middle of a room full of people.
"But I also saw something I hadn’t seen before. Wrestling is built around masculinity, but in its own way it is also transgressive — even queer. Men in wrestling wear bright colors. They intimately touch other men in public. When they’re allied, they speak of each other in the warm terms of life partners; when they’re at odds, they issue ambiguously sexual threats such as “I want your ass.” Most importantly, they show pain."
Watching some of the tributes to Benjamin Satterley "Pac", who passed away unexpectedly at the start of the week, it's hard not to see the faint traces of a better masculinity in some of these wrestlers, one unafraid to be vulnerable and show pain.

For the first time in a wee while I've got a whole weekend all to myself, and I am looking forward to it. I'm going to have a long lie, potter about the garden if it's dry, maybe make some music and go for a walk. It's good to have some time to yourself. Look after yourselves, and take care.
