This week in Greenwich: track title overturned, North Street closes, speed cameras face RTM vote
Good morning, Greenwich.
Graduation caps flew, a championship was stripped, and North Street is about to get a lot quieter. The Nationals' 8U and 9U teams played in their first-ever spring championship at Banksville on Saturday, the kind of milestone that makes a youth sports parent forget about parking.
Here's what's in this week's Pulse:
- A CIAC decision reversed the GHS outdoor track title by half a point
- North Street Bridge closes for 2.5 months starting June 8
- The RTM takes up speed cameras Monday night
- A 216-kid school proposed for the former Acme site
Best for families this week: Pelagic Kids Fishing Camp is booking summer sessions on Long Island Sound (ages 8-18, Coast Guard captains, half-day format).
Beach report: Tod's Point holds its A+ from Save the Sound. Byram stays at D+ on stormwater runoff. Head to the Point.

The Week in Greenwich
GHS Track Championship Overturned by Half a Point
The Greenwich Cardinals won the Class LL outdoor track title at Veterans Stadium in New Britain on May 30, finishing 82.5 to Hamden's 77. Medals were distributed. Coaches shook hands. Then the CIAC granted a religious accommodation allowing a Hamden athlete to compete in Sunday's Class MM meet, where he placed third in triple jump for 6 additional points. Revised final: Hamden 83, Greenwich 82.5. Nearly 100 parents and students have submitted a formal document requesting co-champion status. The head referee was reportedly not informed of the exemption before it was executed. Had the title stood, GHS would have swept the LL and FCIAC championships in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track in a single school year. (Greenwich Free Press | Greenwich Time)
Graduation Season
Sacred Heart Greenwich celebrated its 177th class on Friday: 69 graduates, nine lifers, 12 committed collegiate athletes. Valedictorian Arianna Chin heads to MIT; co-valedictorian Clare Junius to Princeton. Commencement speaker Linda Sanford spent four decades at IBM and made Fortune's most powerful women list three consecutive years. Greenwich Country Day also sent off its Class of 2026 this week. Speed Camera Debate Sharpens Ahead of RTM Vote
The school-zone speed camera question lands at the RTM on Monday June 8, and the tone has shifted from safety to surveillance. Privacy and data concerns dominated the May hearing, where roughly 60 people signed up to speak. The program, run by Blue Line Solutions out of Chattanooga, has been suspended since April 2. Fines run $50 first offense, $75 after. Greenwich resident Susan Mulvey Rattray argues the town can monitor its own speeds without outsourcing to Tennessee. (Greenwich Free Press | Greenwich Time)
BOE Adds Pre-K to Riverside, Saves $5 Million
The Board of Education voted 6-2 to restore Pre-K classrooms to the Riverside School renovation, reversing a February 2025 decision. The extra 2,700 square feet costs roughly $800,000 per classroom but triggers $7 million in state reimbursement. Board member Veronica Chiavaroli called the savings "tremendous." Construction is budgeted at $48 million for FY 2027. (Greenwich Free Press)
Community Rallies for Morlot Park and Hamill Rink
Leaders from 18 organizations, including Greenwich Cardinals Youth Hockey, YWCA Greenwich, and the Cos Cob Crushers, signed an open letter urging the RTM to approve the Morlot Park and Hamill Rink renovation. The facility has served Byram for 50 years. The letter notes that 37 of 45 opposition comments during the P&Z process came from five individuals. (Patch)
