Ridiculous Opinions #94

Here’s how this works, folks. I made a movie. I finished it this week, aside from a few minor technical tweaks that will be fixed soon, but the truth is that I made a movie. Shouldn’t that be enough? It certainly isn’t. And when you’re doing something all by yourself, taking the next steps can be like scaling a mountain.
The first thing people say when I tell them that I’ve made a movie is, “When can I see it?” And the answer to that question is, “Probably not for a long time.” When you make something like this, you don’t put it on Youtube and let every schmo on the planet have a look. Once you’ve finished, that’s only one part of the process. You have to get the movie seen but you can’t just let everyone see it.
So, I have to formulate a plan. I have to have a strategy. And that strategy will morph and change as time goes on. You can’t simply call up Netflix and say, “Here’s my movie! Put it on!”And the entertainment industry is full of “gatekeepers” that keep out the riffraff and keep things exclusive. That’s why the children and relatives of famous people have a tendency to be successful in the business.
