Ridiculous Opinions #156

I know that many of you purchased my awesome tome, The Completely Unreliable Guide to Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. If you did so, you’re lucky, because it is now a collector’s item. Yesterday, I received a letter from Amazon saying that they’ve taken it off the shelves due to copyright violations on the cover. According to them, I cannot use the image that I had on the cover, nor can I use the term Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom anywhere there. These are trademarked phrases and images, so that’s a no-go.
Now, there is a defense to all of this. Disney has expressly said that they don’t have time to go through all of the images of their company that people want to use for their books, so they allow people to use those images on their covers without approval (and as long as you’re not using them in any malicious form…which might be a bit of an issue with my book…but I digress). I took the picture on the cover myself, so they’re fine with that.
