In my attempt to expand the empire of Maurice the Beaver, I have recently begun posting in other places besides Instagram. Instagram might have, at one time, been a good place to post, and it offers an interesting format to get the word out to people, but it’s really a dead-end in terms of getting more eyes on my comic. I only get the same people looking through the post and most of the people that follow me (yes, I’m including YOU) don’t even read the stupid things because their attention span is too short to read through a four-panel comic about a beaver.
Interestingly enough, the place where I have gotten the most views is Reddit, which also offers an interesting format. The only trouble is that I have had a great deal of trouble understanding Reddit. I always viewed Reddit as a place where trolls and internet weirdos hung out, but it seems that Reddit is a very nuanced place, where there are thousands of communities that each focus on a specific niche. Once you can start to wrap your head around that, it becomes an okay place.
So, I started posting my cartoons on Reddit when I began the new series. I didn’t get a lot of traction there, but once Elon Musk made an appearance in the strip, my views shot up. This all culminated in #416 (included below) which is what finally got a bit of attention from the worshipers of the Church of Elon. I was getting around 900 views a day for my cartoons (still far more than Instagram, which gets around 50-100 views a day), but with this particular cartoon, I got 12,000 views in 24 hours.
