Ridiculous Opinions #141

Every year here in Abu Dhabi, they have the F1 Race.
Notice how I refer to it, vaguely, as the “F1 Race”? I do that because I don’t have the faintest clue as to what the hell F1 is, not do I have the faintest clue in regard to why people have an interest in watching F1 cars zip around the track (you could say the same thing about NASCAR with me). Like watching golf on television, I just don’t get it. Where is the fun in watching this? Why do people have an interest in watching rich people drive endlessly around a track in scientifically-designed cars where you have teams of thirty sitting in a pit, ready to change your friggin’ tires because they’ve worn out from driving endlessly around a track in a scientifically-designed car? To me, watching F1 races is the living embodiment of what is wrong with society.
But I digress.
Because contradiction is balance, we have tickets to the F1 race today. It’s the practice round. I have no idea what to expect. But we didn’t buy tickets for the race. We have tickets for the concert afterward. Every year, Abu Dhabi spends UNTOLD amounts of money to bring in musicians for their post-race concerts. They actually do a good job of this, because they bring in artists that run the gamut in terms of pleasing the public. They have artists for the young, artists for British people, and artists for the olds (like me). Beyonce was the first artist to perform here. In the time since, they’ve had Post Malone, Guns ‘n Roses, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Weeknd (sp?), and this year, it’s The Foo Fighters.
