Ridiculous Opinions #140

Over the last week or so, we have been watching Peter Jackson’s documentary on The Beatles, called Get Back. I don’t know why we sat down to watch it. I’m not a gargantuan Beatles fan and the thought of watching an eight-hour documentary about the recording of one album was a bit off-putting. Why would someone want to spend eight-hours watching something like this? These guys had their time. We’ve moved on to bigger and better things. Life has continued. The Beatles are history. Let’s move on.
I’m glad I didn’t listen to my baser instincts. I put the first episode on and my entire family was mesmerized. There was something so, incredibly fresh about watching this film that it could be one of my all-time favorites. I don’t even know where to begin.
Very early on in the first episode, Paul McCartney is sitting there during some downtime, noodling around on his guitar. Having written a few songs, myself (see an earlier newsletter), I immediately knew what he was doing: He was writing a song. What I failed to realize until a few seconds in is that we were witnessing the birth of one of the most famous songs ever, Get Back.
