Friendship in an Age of Crisis

Dear Friends and Associates,
It is with pleasure that we announce our 2026 summer humanities program. This year’s theme is Friendship in an Age of Crisis. In the present context characterized by major environmental and political upheavals, let us reflect on the resources that our personal bonds can provide. Applications are now open.
Over three weeks, while working and living on a permaculture homestead on Manitoulin Island, we’ll be exploring questions such as:
How do we define friendship and how has it been understood historically? How is it related and how is it different from terms such as kinship, love, and diplomacy?
What does it mean to be a friend to the non-human?
Why has friendship been a core element in so many Indigenous-Canadian treaties?
What political and spiritual possibilities does friendship offer as a model for relating to one another in times of crisis and upheaval.
All this while learning new skills in permaculture, visiting local community organizations, and exploring the island’s natural and cultural heritage. Join us to become part of a growing community of scholar-workers aiming to reshape the landscape of humanities education in the Great Lakes region.
