A New Start

Dear friends and associates,
Last year, we organized a three-week pilot program to explore the prospects for alternative liberal arts education in Ontario. It was a great success, thanks to many of you.
Now, it’s a new year, and we’re excited to share some of our plans to build on last year’s work. We have both been far from home over the past year pursuing our doctorates: Julia has been in Philadelphia studying medieval theology while Philippe is in France, translating and writing on environmental and political theory. But we are eager to get back to the Great Lakes next summer for another season of labour, study, and community.
New Name
First, as you may have noticed, we have a brand new name and logo. Emphasizing our goal to situate the humanities outside the sphere of the self-interest-driven market and enmesh it in the public space of environmental, political, and economic relationships, we are proud to reveal our new name:
The Great Lakes Institute of Public Humanities – or GLIPH for short
With the renaming comes a new website: we can now be found at www.gli-ph.com and you can contact us directly at info@gli-ph.com. We have a temporary logo and will be planning a redesign in the next few months.
New Connections
We are also excited to share that we are officially members of the Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes. CHCI “advances cross-institutional partnerships, recognizes regional humanities cultures, and mobilizes the collective capacity of the humanities to engage the most pressing issues in society today” and supports humanities centers around the world “through advocacy, grant-making, and inclusive collaboration.” We’re very excited to be a part of this network. Learn more about their work here.

Stay tuned over the coming months for more updates about future programming, and if you haven’t yet done so, be sure to follow us on Instagram!
Best,
Julia & Philippe
