FAQS about Sanctuary
Hi there,
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been talking with women interested in being part of the fall Sanctuary circle. A few questions have come up again and again, so I wanted to answer them here, in case you’ve been wondering the same things.
1) What do we do at our gatherings?
Each gathering is a blend of turning inward and sharing with each other. We typically begin with a little chit-chat and some grounding practices to help us all arrive.
Next, there’s space for self-exploration. This could look like a mix of guided meditation, journal prompts, and contemplative practices.
Then, we have time for sharing with each other. We ask questions and offer observations together. During this time, we have clear boundaries so the space feels safe, judgment-free, and supportive. And you don’t have to share. It’s always up to you.
I also want to be clear: there is no lesson plan or curriculum here. This isn’t a program. It’s a space we hold. What happens in each circle is really based on what’s happening within each woman and what’s happening among us all together.
2) What types of women join Sanctuary?
Something I’m really proud of is that we’re a diverse, multigenerational group of women. We’ve had women in their 30s and 50s sitting in the same circle. Women from different countries, career paths, backgrounds, and faith traditions.
The things I notice that are the same are a genuine desire for deeper connection, healing, and authenticity.
Maybe most important of all, the women who join Sanctuary are so, so loving and kind to each other. They’re open-hearted and funny and real. After we’ve had time to bond, they’re willing to let their guard down and their tears to flow. They’re willing to be vulnerable.
And gosh, they show up.
Again and again, I’ve heard some version of, “Man, I really didn’t feel like coming tonight and almost canceled. But I’m so glad I came.”
3) How did you get into this?
I started talking about bringing people together like this when I was teaching at Highland Yoga. When the pandemic hit and the studios closed, it gave me the opportunity to try something new. I started hosting women’s circles online and then in my living room.
Over the years, those circles took different forms—intuition circles, meditation circles, new moon circles—and they kept evolving.
A few years ago, I opened a studio because I wanted to grow the circles, but I ended up teaching a lot of yoga and not having much space for what I really wanted to create. Eventually, I realized I needed to step away from the studio and yoga teaching and return to the circles.
Sanctuary was born at the start of this year. This is our third season, and I’m so proud of what we’re creating together.
If you have other questions—or you’re just curious about Sanctuary—I’m hosting a Q&A night this Wednesday at 7:30 pm. I’d love for you to join us. The fall circle begins September 22nd.
Hit reply and I’ll send you the link.
With care,
