From the Editor

Day 156. For five months, we’ve followed maps of missile ranges, shipping lanes and evacuation warnings issued thousands of miles away. This morning, the red lines are in Spokane.

Three wind-driven fires have burned an estimated 600 structures and put roughly 5,000 homes under evacuation orders. One crossed the Spokane River. The state declared an emergency; the National Weather Service used the phrase “particularly dangerous situation.” This time, the official language matches the danger.

Maps make distance look tidy. Then the warning arrives on a neighbor’s phone and geography becomes an address.

The news, neat. The neighbors, first.
