The Schrebergarten (Can 017)
How I was leaving my plans by the roadside
After all the snow from the beginning of the year had finally melted, I spent a few sunny days not going outside and not taking any photos. But then, on a grey day in February, I thought to myself: today’s the day. Well - it’s gotta "feel right," otherwise it’s no fun. So I hopped on my bike and headed out with a goal in mind.
However, I never actually reached the place I was aiming for because something else entirely grabbed my attention:
A Schrebergarten.

Right next to the road, under a newly built cell tower, stood a shed. A small box - almost black - with two white windows on the front. Next to it, a greenhouse and some junk scattered around. What was left of the fence gave a rough idea of where the garden's borders used to be.

The shed was open, the side window already broken. The floor was littered with all kinds of small bits - constant crunching under my shoes. Plates and other dishes were still on the table, as if someone had just walked away in the middle of moving out or something. A somewhat surreal sight overall. The grass all around was bone dry. Dead weeds poking up into the air. Nature is in the process of reclaiming the space. Plastic chairs on the porch, fake flowers with a string of lights - and a pile of old rubber slides lying in the grass next to the shed …

So, my trip that day went differently than planned - to the Schrebergarten and back. You can find a few shots here and a few more on the website. And if I make it to my original destination soon, maybe there’ll be a newsletter about it. But that’s a story for another roll.
See ya,
Rob
