what is formyths doing

a very short one this time:

art ✎

a riso printed spiral bound book sits on a cutting mat, trimmed metal coils around it. the cover features fire against a blue sky, a figurine of an animal missing its head, and the title "skinning" in spiky red lettering.

have been busy with deadlines and then spent a solid few weeks working on the print version of my new year comic - here’s the fancy new title page. + also a title, skinning, taken from one translation of hexagram 49 革 (which is variously also named molting, transformation, reform, and revolution).

this will be debuting at tcaf! also the riso printer i was using broke right after i finished this. possibly an omen.

spent a lot of time trying to hunt down metal spirals that worked with the standard coil binder machine and almost thought i’d have to give up on getting these done in time but thanks to pel manufacturing for pulling through, if by some tiny chance someone else here is also in a crunch for a very specific binding material. the typical spiral coils used in this type of binding are made out of plastic (which is much cheaper), but i really want to try to use as little plastic as possible in the work that i make — i already generate enough plastic waste in my day to day life… if any of my books are still around in 500 years i want it to be because of someone’s archive or a freak accident and not because parts of them can literally never decompose. (also imo the metal looks nicer.)

layered riso test prints in shades of blue-green and yellow, showing trees & a ruin reflecting over water

otherwise the only other non-work art i have going on is getting a head start on the riso print club piece for may. here’s a little preview — if you’d like to get this one, you have until the end of the month (april 30) to sign up on patreon. thanks so much to everyone who has subscribed so far!

other stuff ✷

thanks if you stopped by one of the events i tabled at over the past 2 months! here’s how my schedule for the rest of 2024 is starting to shape up:

  • toronto comic arts festival - may 11-12

  • small press expo - sep 14-15

have confirmed at least one more event + hopefully will have more to announce next time.

doodles of seaweed, shells, and strange oceanic shapes in green ink on small cards

have mostly not been drawing outside of client work / tabling prep but did get some fountain pens recently! here’s a bunch of doodles i’ve been doing on old business cards. i used to use dip pens a lot so i’ve been really enjoying getting back to the feel of ink on paper. hopefully will get the chance to do some bigger drawings soon.

best,
