this could be the end of wanting

Welcome to the first issue of my newsletter and thank you for following along! I borrowed the title from Phoebe Bridgers, her new album has been on repeat in my home.

I am in the rough draft stages of the next installment in my t4t romance/dramedy series Wallace and Zephyr . They’re going to get married!

Wallace remembers the first wedding he went to
zephyr remembers the first wedding they went to
zephyr and their mom discuss what to wear to the wedding
Mahal is a Tagalog term of endearment
mayumi, zephyr's mom, shares a personal story about her experience becoming a mom
wallace and zephyr fill out the marriage license
wallace proposes a challenge
I copied the layout for this page from the Nana manga.
more cuddles and 4play
they go to Southie
I was listening to the Celtic folk standard, Dark Island, when I drew this.
To wear kilt commando or not...
Noemi reacts to a dry wedding
Noemi continuing to be weird about Wallace
Zephyr calls Wallace for support

My first step in the comics-making process is imagining scenarios, little pieces of story out of sequence, and then connecting them together chronologically with other bits. It feels like working on a jigsaw puzzle. Once I rough out the whole comic (including revisions), I move onto the final art with pencils, inks, and watercolors. I’ve been doing these in an A5 blank hobonichi notebook. I don’t call them thumbnails because I like to work BIG! Even if much of the drawing is loose and details are suggested by a few lines. I’m sticking to a six-panel grid to these so far, but I will be varying up panel sizes in the final art as I see fit.

When I work on these, I enjoy carrying my notebook to different places. I’ve found that being in a library or cafe turns on my brain to think in new ways! I’ve been making comics since I was 13, about 20 years ago. Making comics feels natural, like breathing, like a language. I always want to be learning and growing, but I’m proud of the instincts I’ve developed for panel flow and character drawing.

A particular highlight of this summer was going to FlameCon! I enjoyed the train ride down to stay at my sisters’ apartments and was excited to see fellow comics friends, many of whom I hadn’t seen in a while. I wasn’t tabling but I was on a fun and thought-provoking panel about Queer Adult Comics.

I’d like to give a shout-out to the amazing cartoonists I spent time with that weekend:

Ellie

PomPoison

Giles

BoyToyRodeo

Liam

Tanya

Definitely check them all out!

Here’s where I’ll be tabling at for the rest of the year:

-Small Press Expo in Bethesda, MD: September 12-13

-Somerville Zine Fest (Massachusetts): October 3

-Nonfiction Comics Fest in Burlington, VT: November 14

And volunteering at MICE (Massachusetts): December 5-6!

If you’re local to these areas or also tabling, I would love to see you there and give you some goodies!

best wishes,

Catalina
