State of the Mountain - 06-2026

It’s Worse Than That! Vol 3 releases this month. It teaches you to apply precise pressure based on feedback collected before, during, and after game sessions, while building trust that allows everyone to play harder. This is my focus this month, and I hope it’s got your interest too.

I’ve written three zinis so far and am getting them into the hands of a few interested folks for pre-release feedback. Each one focuses on a single monster, with rumors, spoor, an OSE statblock, and an encounter seed with a map and key. Series One will be 5 issues focused on undead, things that are still doing what death taught them. Read more about one of the monsters, the celegthuros, here.

The Beneath Ahknoor playtest is proving out something I hoped the Saga procedure would do.

Two groups received identical prompts about the same dungeon. They created different dungeons. One built a dungeon of transformation. The other built a dungeon of obligation and grief.

The full post, coming Monday, will explore what that means and why it matters to Beneath Ahknoor.

You can stay up to date on my playtest at the Beneath Ahknoor page.

I took the Kingdom-as-Faction experiment from the blog to my Arden Vul table. Two quick crossroads; one for the Beastmen, one for Plumthorn's gang—produced immediate faction movement and several future complications. It worked better than I expected.

I’ve posted a couple of devlogs that help explain why Volume 3 matters to the series and what you’ll learn and practice with it.

  • Volume 3 Changed the Thesis
